BlackBerry Motion Officially Announced
BlackBerry put an end to its long-simmering hardware misery and stopped designing new phones in 2016, opting to move entirely into the software sector. Yet the actual BlackBerry brand continues to shuffle along in the form of a partnership with Chinese company TCL, which earlier this year released the BlackBerry KeyOne, a moderately successful throwback phone which retained the increasingly obsolete physical keyboard.
The BlackBerry Motion is an all-touch smartphone designed to "empower the most challenging, on-the-go lifestyle." It's a mid-ranged device much along the lines of DTEK50 released by BlackBerry last year.
The software will still seem familiar. The Motion is running a customized take on Android 7.1 like its predecessor, and you'll get the same security-focused apps intended to make it business- and privacy-friendly.
TCL, best known for making budget televisions and phones (under the Alcatel OneTouch brand), hopes to win some business customers of its own with its take on the BlackBerry family. The Motion is intended to show that the KeyOne isn't a one-off product, and that TCL intends to create a new portfolio of products with the BlackBerry name.
The phone will only be available in select markets at first, and North America isn't one of them. TCL has priced the BlackBerry motion at AED 1,699/ SAR 1,699 in the region which translates to about US$460. International pricing is yet to be announced, though so far, the BlackBerry Motion is only set for release in the Middle East.
With no KeyBoard and a Giant Battery
The new handset features a 5.5-inch HD display, 4GB of RAM and a 4,000mAh battery with support for QuickCharge 3.0. The Motion, which was unveiled at the GITEX 2017 trade show, is also rated IP67 for dust and water resistance.
