Apple sets iPhone 8 launch date for September 12
Apple is widely expected to announce three new iPhones at the event: a next-generation iPhone 8 model with an edge-to-edge OLED display and a new 3D face-scanning camera, according to earlier reports in Bloomberg; and updated versions of the current iPhone 7 and 7 Plus with wireless charging. Additionally, the company is rumored to have a new 4K Apple TV in the works, along with Apple Watches that could feature LTE connectivity.
The new iPhone models are expected to not feature the traditional Touch ID fingerprint scanner, and instead house 3D sensors to enable facial recognition feature. Apple made the fingerprint scanner popular on smartphones, so it will be interesting to see how the company attempts to set the next trend for authentication on phones.
According to earlier reports, the iPhone models will have much smaller chins -- bezels -- allowing company to fit bigger displays in the same (as iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus), if not smaller form factor. Speaking of which, reports suggest that at least one of the models will feature OLED display (current generation iPhone models ship with LCD displays). Which brings us to its rumoured price: $999.
We might also see some other products on September 12. One school of thought predicts the new Apple Watch with built-in LTE getting a little stage time. Apple may also, finally, set a launch date for the Siri-infused HomePod.
We Finally Know When Apple will Announce the iPhone 8.
Apple has sent out invites to lucky members of the media and analysts on Thursday afternoon, officially marking September 12, 10 AM PT, as the event date and setting the stage with what should be Apple's biggest product launch in years.
This may be Apple's most expensive iPhone at a starting price of $1,000. Which is one reason why most experts believe Apple will also unveil the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, two upgrades to their current iPhone models that will look virtually the same, offer some component and performance upgrades, and be considerably cheaper than the new flagship smartphone.
